Chiral Gauge Theories and Fermion–Higgs Systems

چکیده
The amount of work on lattice theory relating to chiral gauge theory has dramatically increased this year with some forty papers in the subject, represented by about twenty contributions to this conference. In contrast, only a handful of papers have been written in the broader field of fermion–Higgs systems without an eye toward chiral gauge theory. Therefore, with one exception, I have decided to limit my review to the topic of chiral gauge theories, and within that I will primarily emphasize the conceptual developments rather than numerical simulations. The exception is some work in the pure Higgs sector concerning the regularization dependence of the upper bound for the Higgs mass[1] to which I would like to draw your attention. Last March, a very pleasant workshop was held in Rome, on the topic of non-perturbative approaches to chiral gauge theories. In that workshop, virtually all proposals around at the time were presented, following which some quite intense discussions took place in the proverbial smoke-filled back room in an attempt to understand the problems of some of the proposals and the connections between them. Some valuable insights were gained in these discussions and in my talk I will attempt to portray the underlying theme that we arrived at during that meeting. The topics discussed in the Rome workshop are the following:

Fermion Interactions in the Wilson Yukawa Approach for Lattice Chiral Gauge Theories
We consider fermion-gauge couplings in the Wilson-Yukawa approach for lattice chiral gauge theories. At the leading order of a fermionic hopping parameter expansion we find that the fermion-gauge coupling has a chiral and tree-like structure. We argue that this fermion-gauge coupling remains non-zero in the continuum limit taken in the Higgs phase. Possible fermionscalar couplings in this appro...
متن کاملFermion Number Violation and a Two-dimensional Higgs Model
The investigation of topological properties of the gauge field in a two-dimensional Higgs model can help in understanding anomalous fermion number violation. 1. A simple model for fermion number violation Fermion number, which is the sum of baryon number and lepton number (B+L), is not conserved in the Standard Model 1. This is due to the anomaly in the fermion current. The lattice formulation ...
متن کاملComplementarity and chiral fermions in SU(2) gauge theories.
Complementarity the absence of a phase boundary separating the Higgs and confinement phases of a gauge theory can be violated by the addition of chiral fermions. We utilize chiral symmetry violating fermion correlators such as 〈ψ̄ψ〉 as order parameters to investigate this issue. Using inequalities similar to those of Vafa-Witten and Weingarten, we show that SU(2) gauge theories with Higgs and fe...
متن کاملAnomalous fermion number violation and numerical simulations
After discussing the problem of lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, a simple model for anomalous fermion number violation is formulated which can be numerically studied with present day technique. Exploratory results of numerical simulations of a two-dimensional U(1) Higgs model are presented.
متن کاملRenormalizability of a lattice chiral fermion in the overlap formulation
Renormalizability of a lattice chiral fermion is studied at one loop level in the overlap formulation in four dimensions. The fermion chirality is examined including the self-energy corrections due to gauge interactions. Divergent terms breaking the chiral symmetry do not appear and the chiral fermion is renormalized, preserving the correct chiral properties without adding new counter-terms or ...
